As part of the Uisce Éireann Water Supply Project Eastern and Midlands Region, TOBIN has undertaken a comprehensive programme of winter bird surveys to support the project’s environmental assessments and ensure the highest standards of ecological protection. In March 2025, we completed another full season of winter bird surveys which commenced in October 2024, keeping our baseline information up to date and robust. Our survey work over this period included the following survey methodologies, using current and best practice guidance and literature:
Vantage Point Surveys – conducted at key locations to record flight activity of sensitive bird species, providing data on flight paths, frequency, and altitude to inform impact assessments.
Irish Wetland Bird Surveys (I-WeBS) – carried out along the shores of Lough Derg and Parteen Basin and across other wetlands and open water habitats within the study area of the Proposed Project, to accurately assess overwintering waterbird populations and species diversity.
The results of these surveys will be carefully analysed and used to provide robust scientific data to inform the Environmental Impact Assessment Report and Appropriate Assessment for the Proposed Project.
We’re proud to continue to play a key role in the Water Supply Project Eastern and Midlands Region and are excited to continue our collaboration with Uisce Éireann, ensuring sustainable and reliable water solutions for the future.
