Ballintubber Abbey

TOBIN were involved in the refurbishment of Ballintubber Abbey. The work involved a detailed survey of the Chapter House and 14th century doorway at Ballintubber Abbey, with a structural assessment of the capacity of the Chapter House walls to accept a load-bearing floor built in 1994 which would partition the vertical spaces in two areas.

The upper Retreat Room and audio-visual Visitors Centre would be accessed from the nave of the Abbey via a new stone stairway rising to the original elevated doorway. Structural anchors were cast into the stone walls in the Chapter House to accept the load-bearing floor, and these were tested for capacity in situ.

The new stone staircase was detailed and finished to match the existing internal whitewashed walls, in accordance with archaeological advice received on the building materials and finishes appropriate to the Abbey. The lower room of the Chapter House was converted into a visitor service area.
