One of the most rewarding aspects of ecological survey work at TOBIN, An AtkinsRéalis Company, is the opportunity to access and assess habitats that are not always easy to reach. During a recent survey along the Clodiagh River, Co. Waterford, our ecologists were fortunate to observe several signs of otter activity in an area that would normally be difficult to access due to water levels.
Among the highlights were some excellent examples of clear and well-preserved otter footprints, providing evidence of their presence along the watercourse. It’s always encouraging to record signs of this protected species and gain a better understanding of how it uses the local habitat.
The survey also provided an opportunity to capture some great images of the river itself, showcasing the quality and diversity of the riparian environment. These habitats play a vital role in supporting wildlife and are an important consideration in the work we do.
Observations like these highlight the importance of field-based ecological surveys in identifying and protecting species and habitats, ensuring that they are fully considered as part of the Ecological Impact Assessment process and helping to support informed, sustainable development.
